About Us

UNI Jazz Studies. Jazz has been an integral part of the University of Northern Iowa School of Music for over 60 years. The original band, formed and run by student musicians in the early 1950's, eventually evolved into the UNI Jazz Studies program.

This nationally recognized program has grown to include several large and small jazz ensembles as well as a full curriculum of jazz studies courses. Read More

Jazz Band One Performs at JEN
Jazz Band One performed at the inaugural conference of the Jazz Education Network ath the University of Missouri-St. Louis in May. Joining them on the trip was director Chris Merz's quartet, Equilateral.

Nagel Wins ETW Jazz Competition
Joel Nagel (UNI '08) is this year's winner of the Eastern Trombone Workshop jazz competition. The award included a spot as guest soloist with the Army Blues big band on their concert March 19, which was broadcast live over the internet. Joel is currently completing work on his MM at the University of Northern Colorado. The jazz area at UNI congratulates Joel on this honor.

Beadel Receives 2010 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award
Courtney Beadel was a recipient of the 2010 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer's Award for her composition, Revolution. Revolution is a part of the 2008-2009 UNI Jazz Band One record, Strange Wonderful. Contact Chris Merz to purchase Strange Wonderful.

Michael Conrad wins Downbeat Award
Michael ConradMike Conrad won the prestigious Downbeat Student Recording award for his arrangement of Joe Henderson's Tetragon. Also winning a Downbeat award was Easton Stuard (MM Jazz Pedagogy, '09) in the Jazz Composition category. Conrad is currently completing his student teaching, and Stuard is working toward a DMA at the University of Illinois.

UNI Jazz Band One has produced several recordings, including the newest offering, Strange Wonderful, featuring the 2008-2009 edition of the band. See Them All
